New Stripes on 32nd Street

Remember Riding into Trouble, the video from a few months back?

Today a lot has changed at 32nd Street. Two traffic lanes have been removed to make room for bike lanes. It’s much more comfortable riding this short street from Newport Blvd. to the beach boardwalk.

From the other direction, the Seashore bike lanes now continue all the way to Balboa Blvd. which makes for easy and safe pedaling as we go from say Lido Island to the beach boardwalk.

There’s still room for improvements. Back at 32nd and Newport Blvd — just a brief observation this afternoon and the few previous times I’ve traveled here lately — cyclists are still salmoning up the sidewalk to take the crosswalk across Newport Blvd. We need some indicators that bicycles should cross on the right.

So there’s still work to be done here and it’s worth it — 32nd Street at Newport Blvd was reported to be the worst intersection in the city for bicycle collisions.
